DailyKenn.com — A 42-year-old man was fatally shot in Kalamazoo in the early hours of May 28, prompting a police investigation that led to the arrest of a 28-year-old suspect now charged with open murder.
Officers with the Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety responded to 911 calls around 1:30 a.m. near the intersection of Riverview Drive and East Paterson Street, where they found Michael Richard Powers suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the head and abdomen.
Emergency personnel performed CPR at the scene and transported Powers to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries at 3:16 a.m., authorities said.
Following an investigation, police arrested Anthony Shawn-Tyrone Thomas, 28, on June 2 in connection with the shooting. He was arraigned later that day on charges of open murder, two counts of felony firearm, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, and carrying a concealed weapon. Bond was denied.
Thomas remains in custody at the Kalamazoo County Jail pending further court proceedings.
