HAMPSHIRE, Ill. — A Hampshire High School senior, 17-year-old Deegan Kirschke, was fatally shot inside an apartment on the 100 block of High Street in Hampshire.
Authorities say Kirschke and three others, including the suspect, 20-year-old Keyshaun D. Davis, were reportedly filming themselves disassembling and reassembling a 9 mm handgun belonging to Davis’ mother. Davis placed the gun on a table and went to the bathroom; upon returning, he picked up the firearm and it discharged, striking Kirschke in the abdomen. Kirschke died at the scene.
Davis has been charged with involuntary manslaughter, child endangerment causing death, reckless discharge of a firearm, and two counts of unlawful possession of a gun and ammunition. At a detention hearing, prosecutors argued that Davis posed a danger to others, but Judge Salvatore LoPiccolo granted him pretrial release, citing that the involuntary manslaughter and child endangerment charges are not detainable offenses. The judge also denied electronic home monitoring.
Hampshire High School and District 300 officials extended condolences and announced that counseling services are available to students and staff as the community mourns the tragic loss.
