BAINBRIDGE, Ga. — A Georgia daycare worker faces serious charges after allegedly abusing a 1-year-old boy on his first day at Little Blessings Child Care, authorities said. Yvette Thurston, 54, was arrested Aug. 11 and charged with one count of first-degree aggravated battery and three counts of first-degree child abuse, according to Bainbridge police.

The incident occurred at Little Blessings Child Care, a facility affiliated with the Bainbridge Church of God. Cory Weeks, the father of the victim, 1-year-old Clay Weeks, reported that his son returned home with a black eye, swollen face, and multiple cuts and bruises. Weeks, a U.S. Marine, said he was initially told by Thurston that another child caused the injuries with a plastic toy. However, surveillance footage reviewed by police and Weeks allegedly showed Thurston harming the toddler.

“Nothing we saw was for the faint-hearted, especially happening to such an innocent soul,” Weeks said in a Facebook post, describing the footage. He expressed outrage, noting, “The severity of the acts of violence to our son has everyone confident that this was not her first time.”

Clay was treated at Memorial Hospital and Manor for his injuries. The Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL) confirmed it is investigating the allegations and working with law enforcement. “Our agency is currently conducting a thorough investigation into the situation,” DECAL said in a statement to WALB.

Thurston’s bond was set at $44,000, and jail records indicate she has since bonded out of Decatur County Jail. Attempts to reach Little Blessings Child Care and the Bainbridge Church of God for comment were unsuccessful. The investigation remains ongoing, with DECAL and police collaborating to ensure a comprehensive review of the incident.
