ST. PAUL, Minn. — Jeffrey S. Matson, a 43-year-old Brooklyn Park resident and beloved beer vendor for the St. Paul Saints, was fatally shot outside the Midway Saloon in St. Paul’s Midway neighborhood on Aug. 7, 2025. The incident occurred shortly after midnight in the 1500 block of University Avenue, following an altercation with Davarius L. Clark, a 29-year-old bouncer at the bar.

According to police, the dispute began when Matson brought his bicycle inside the bar, which was permitted by the bar’s manager. Clark, however, confronted Matson, leading to a heated argument. Surveillance footage confirmed that Matson spat on Clark multiple times during the confrontation outside the bar. Clark, who had a valid permit to carry a firearm, told investigators he became “very angry” and “blacked out” before shooting Matson in the chest. Matson was rushed to Regions Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Clark was charged on Aug. 8 with two counts of second-degree murder in Ramsey County District Court. He remains in custody with bail set at $1 million and is scheduled to appear in court again on Aug. 14. Clark told police at the scene, “I wouldn’t have shot someone for no reason, but do what you gotta do.” The bar’s manager stated that Clark was not employed as armed security and was unaware that Clark carried a firearm.

Matson had been a familiar presence at CHS Field since the St. Paul Saints’ inaugural Opening Day in 2015, known for his recognizable voice and warm interactions with fans. Saints President Derek Sharrer expressed the team’s grief, noting that Matson worked as a vendor until the day of his death and would be deeply missed by the organization and its community.
