MAPLE HEIGHTS, Ohio — A 28-year-old Cleveland man, Timothy Kappenhagen, was fatally shot in the parking lot of a Giant Eagle supermarket on Aug. 9, 2025, in what police described as a random act of violence. Kappenhagen was loading groceries into his Hyundai Elantra around 1:40 p.m. when an unidentified suspect approached him. A struggle ensued, and the suspect shot Kappenhagen in the chest before fleeing in the victim’s vehicle.

Kappenhagen was rushed to MetroHealth Medical Center, where he underwent surgery but succumbed to his injuries just before 7 a.m. on Aug. 10, 2025. The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed his death. Police recovered the stolen vehicle in Euclid hours after the incident, and on Aug. 11, RTA police located a vehicle of interest with two men inside, who were taken into custody for questioning. As of Aug. 14, 2025, no charges had been filed, and the investigation remained ongoing, with police still seeking persons of interest.
Kappenhagen, a beloved son, brother, and new uncle, was described by his sister, Heather Anderson, as a reserved individual who enjoyed working, going to the gym, and making music. Anderson expressed her grief, noting her brother’s affection for her newborn son and his role as a mentor to their younger sibling. She urged the suspect to turn themselves in, suggesting the shooting may have stemmed from a panicked reaction during the confrontation.
The media suggested the victim was "in the wrong" by being in "the wrong place at the wrong time."
Witnesses reported the suspect wore a mask, and police do not believe Kappenhagen knew the assailant, characterizing the incident as a “wrong place, wrong time” situation. A bystander attempted to save Kappenhagen’s life at the scene, an act Anderson publicly thanked. Maple Heights police are continuing their investigation and have asked anyone with information to contact the Maple Heights Detective Bureau at 216-587-9624.
