BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — A 51-year-old Birmingham man, John Byron Roulaine, was fatally shot in a Woodlawn parking lot on Aug. 11, 2025, while waiting to start his workday. The incident occurred around 4:30 a.m. in the 5500 block of First Avenue North, where Roulaine, an employee of ADW Temporary Staffing, was seated in his van. Police reported that a suspect approached Roulaine, leading to a scuffle that ended with the suspect shooting him before fleeing the scene. Roulaine was pronounced dead at 5:19 a.m.
Authorities initially struggled to determine the cause of death, but the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office later confirmed Roulaine had been shot. Surveillance footage from nearby businesses provided detectives with a lead, and by Aug. 18, 2025, Birmingham police, with assistance from the FBI’s North Alabama Safe Streets Task Force and New Orleans Violent Crime Squad, arrested 35-year-old Harold Dailey in New Orleans. Dailey faces capital murder charges for the killing, with police alleging he shot Roulaine during an altercation in the parking lot. The motive remains unclear, with investigators uncertain whether the incident stemmed from a robbery or a personal dispute.
