SANFORD, Fla. (AP) — Joseph Morris Hall, 43, of Key Largo and a longtime charter-boat captain, was fatally shot in Sanford following an apparently minor traffic dispute.
Police say the confrontation began Aug. 14, 2025, when Hall, driving his Jeep Gladiator, was involved in a traffic encounter with 24-year-old Jaden Alexander Harris on State Road 46 near Mangoustine Avenue. According to the arrest report, Hall was driving “super slow,” prompting Harris to pass him in the oncoming lane. Harris alleged that Hall then behaved as if to strike his vehicle, leading Harris to follow Hall so he could photograph his license plate.
The exchange escalated further when Hall reportedly blocked Harris’s path and approached his car. Harris told investigators he warned Hall he “had it on him,” referring to a gun, but fired the first shot when Hall allegedly lunged toward the vehicle. Hall was found unresponsive at an apartment complex and later died at a local hospital.
Chief Cecil Smith of the Sanford Police Department faulted Harris’s refusal to disengage, calling the fatality “preventable” and noting that no one should lose their life over a minor traffic infraction. Harris has been charged with second-degree murder and is being held without bond pending an arraignment scheduled for October.
Hall was a beloved figure in the Florida Keys community, known for captaining the 65-foot Sailors Choice Party Fishing Boat and the Anglers Choice sportfishing charter, based out of Key Largo. He was pronounced dead at HCA Lake Monroe Hospital at approximately 5:45 p.m. His passing prompted an outpouring of grief from friends, customers, and colleagues, including tributes to his passion for the water and the many memories he helped create for families aboard his vessels. His wife mourned that he “poured his whole heart” into the business and that “his spirit will always be on the water.”
