Syracuse Man, 26, Fatally Shot in Ongoing Violence
SYRACUSE, N.Y. — Mason Henry Doran, a 26-year-old resident of Liverpool, New York, was fatally shot on April 23, 2025, in a violent incident on Neutral Court, Syracuse police said. The shooting, which occurred around 7:30 p.m., left Doran with multiple gunshot wounds to his midsection. He was rushed to Upstate University Hospital, where he later died.

Police Chief Joseph Cecile announced the following day that the shooting was being investigated as a homicide. Authorities responded to multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire, and officers found Doran at the scene. A suspect, Mikel Hackett, 39, was later arrested and charged with second-degree murder and weapon charges in connection with Doran’s shooting
The incident was part of a wave of violence in Syracuse that week, with police responding to multiple shootings and a stabbing. On the same day as Doran’s death, a 61-year-old man was fatally shot near Armory Square, and a 32-year-old was stabbed in a nearby area but survived. The following day, a 15-year-old was shot in the leg on Stone Court and was reported in stable condition.
Doran, born on Feb. 19, 1999, in Virginia Beach, Virginia, was described as a caring and devoted individual. He was the son of Colleen and John Doran and is survived by his parents, brother Bryan, half-sisters Gina Doran and Bridget Doran Butcher, brother Ethan, and grandparents Margaret and David Butters. He was predeceased by his grandparents Robert Durkin, Henry, and Ernestine Doran.
Calling hours were held on May 2, 2025, from 4 to 6 p.m. at Thomas J. Pirro Jr. Funeral Home, 3401 Vickery Rd., North Syracuse. A funeral mass took place the next day at 9:30 a.m. at Pope John Roman Catholic Church, 8290 Soule Rd., Liverpool.
