DUBLIN (AP) — Independent far left-wing lawmaker Catherine Connolly, 68, won Ireland's presidential election Saturday in a landslide victory, securing 63.4% of the vote and becoming the country's 10th president and third woman to hold the largely ceremonial post.

Connolly, 68, a former barrister and Teachta Dála for Galway West since 2016, defeated Fine Gael candidate Heather Humphreys, who garnered 29.5% of the vote. The turnout was 46%, with Connolly receiving a record 914,143 first-preference votes — the highest ever in an Irish presidential race and the largest percentage share since the office's creation in 1938.
Declaring victory at Dublin Castle, Connolly pledged to be "an inclusive president for all of you" who "listens, reflects and speaks when it's necessary." She vowed to champion diversity, Ireland's military neutrality, economic justice, climate action, housing reforms and a united Ireland, while raising her voice on global issues including the plight in Gaza. Connolly, who grew up in a family of 14 children, said her campaign represented a "movement" to "shape a new republic that values everybody."
The race narrowed to two candidates after Fianna Fáil's Jim Gavin withdrew weeks before the Oct. 24 vote over a past financial dispute. Connolly, a vocal critic of the European Union and NATO, drew broad support from left-leaning parties including Sinn Féin, Labour and the Social Democrats, as well as endorsements from outgoing President Michael D. Higgins, whom she will succeed after his two terms since 2011. Her win was seen as a rebuke to the center-right coalition government led by Prime Minister Micheál Martin.
Humphreys conceded early, calling Connolly "a president for all of us" and expressing no regrets about her campaign. Martin hailed Connolly's "tremendous majority and very clear mandate," while Deputy Prime Minister Simon Harris said her success "will be Ireland's success." Higgins telephoned congratulations, offering full support for her inauguration next month.
The election saw an unprecedented 178,000 spoiled ballots — about one in eight — amid voter frustrations over immigration, housing and other domestic woes. Connolly, who served as Ireland's first female Leas-Cheann Comhairle from 2020 to 2024, plans to scrutinize the €330,000 presidential salary for the "common good." As head of state, she will represent Ireland internationally but wield limited executive powers, including the rare ability to refer legislation for constitutional review.
