SYRACUSE, N.Y. — A 40-year-old Syracuse man was fatally shot on the city's South Side late Tuesday, marking the city's latest homicide of 2025.

Joseph Castillo was discovered suffering from multiple gunshot wounds to the head, neck, arm and back around 11 p.m. in the 200 block of West Brighton Avenue near Midland Avenue, authorities said. He was rushed to Upstate University Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Officers responding to reports of a shooting with injuries found Castillo inside a red pickup truck that had crashed into a utility pole. The vehicle appeared to have been struck by gunfire before veering off the road.
On Thursday, police arrested 41-year-old Lakeeyah May of Syracuse without incident in the 500 block of West Brighton Avenue. She was charged with second-degree murder and second-degree criminal possession of a weapon. May was arraigned Friday in Syracuse City Court and remanded without bail.
The shooting remains under investigation, with authorities urging witnesses to come forward. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Syracuse Police Department Criminal Investigations Division at 315-442-5222.
This marks the 18th homicide in Syracuse this year, according to police records.
