SPOKANE, Wash. (DailyKenn.com) — A 38-year-old Spokane man was shot and killed while sitting in his car in an apparent ambush early on Oct. 12, 2025, prompting a five-day manhunt that ended with the arrest of a suspect on murder charges.

Derick Shafer was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds in the 600 block of South McClellan Street, just outside Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center on the city's Lower South Hill, shortly before 1 a.m. Police believe the shooter approached Shafer's vehicle on foot, fired several rounds and fled the scene. The Spokane County Medical Examiner's Office ruled the death a homicide.
Shafer, a lifelong Spokane resident and auto detailer, was described by family as a loving "big teddy bear" with a childlike spirit and deep faith. His sister, Ashley Smith, who learned of his death first, said the siblings spoke two days earlier, with Shafer telling her he loved her. He leaves behind a 16-year-old son. "He had the biggest heart," Smith said, adding that Shafer was close to his family and quick to help others.
Smith vowed to pursue justice, dismissing any notion the attack was random. "I will not stop fighting to find out who did this until they're caught and off the streets," she said. Shafer's mother, Laurie Ramirez, expressed shock at the loss, saying, "It's hard for me to imagine anyone being angry at him. He was so loving to everyone."
Authorities arrested Andre D. Moore, 32, on Oct. 17 in connection with the slaying. Moore, who had been awaiting trial on a separate unlawful gun possession charge, faces charges of first-degree murder and third-degree theft. Court documents allege he stalked Shafer and positioned himself for an ambush before opening fire. Multiple witnesses identified Moore from surveillance video based on his clothing and build.
Moore's initial court appearance was delayed due to illness, but he appeared in Spokane County Superior Court on Oct. 20, where his bond remained at $1 million. Smith attended, wearing a black T-shirt bearing Shafer's photo and birth and death dates, and told the judge the system had failed her family. She criticized Moore's apparent lack of remorse in the courtroom.
As the investigation continues, Shafer's family has offered a cash reward for tips and urged anyone with information to contact Crime Check at (509) 456-2233. Friends and relatives held a candlelight vigil on Oct. 19 near the shooting site to honor Shafer's life and memory.
