On a Sunday afternoon in February 2025, a meetup between two classmates took a devastating turn in Schiedam, South Holland, Netherlands. Thirteen-year-old Joni left his home on his bicycle after persistent messages from a peer pulled him outside. What started as an ordinary meeting ended hours later with his death from stab wounds.

Authorities say the encounter happened in a wooded area of Schiedam-Noord. The other boy, also 13 at the time, allegedly lured Joni there. Investigators later determined Joni suffered wounds to his arm and back. Despite the injuries, the teenager showed remarkable resolve: he made it out of the wooded spot and rang a doorbell at a nearby home for help. Emergency services rushed him to Erasmus MC in Rotterdam, but he succumbed to his injuries that evening around 8 p.m., surrounded by family.

Details of the case, which was heavily covered by Dutch media, include initial reports from Joni's family that indicate that he had previously been coerced into criminal activity and was targeted after expressing remorse over a failed street robbery.

The offender was identified as a Turkish alien. Courts linked the perpetrator to earlier violent incidents, including attempted robberies where a knife appeared. One involved an older woman who was stabbed during a failed theft.

The suspect's defense lawyer claimed the killing of Joni was done in self-defense.

The Rotterdam court rejected the self-defense claim. On November 18, 2025, the 14-year-old perpetrator (who had turned 14 by the time of the ruling) was convicted of manslaughter. He received the maximum juvenile sentence of only one year in youth detention, combined with a PIJ measure (a form of youth involuntary psychiatric treatment).

The tragic event shocked the local community, bringing over 1,000 residents out for a silent march in his honor.

This case stands out because both boys were so young. Dutch law treats offenders under 18 differently, focusing on rehabilitation alongside accountability. The suspect faced charges of manslaughter.

Reports indicate prior tensions existed between the pair, including a contact restriction that they apparently ignored on the day of the incident. Snapchat messages and a phone call preceded the meeting. Joni's final text urged the other boy to come quickly by bike.

The event serves as a sobering reminder that safety in suburban neighborhoods requires constant vigilance—from parents monitoring friendships to authorities addressing patterns of youth violence early. Joni's brief life ended far too soon, but his case may drive changes that protect others.
