French Court Hands Down Rare Life Sentence in 2022 Murder of Paris Schoolgirl Lola Daviet
PARIS (DailyKenn.com) — A Paris court on Friday sentenced a 27-year-old Algerian woman to life imprisonment without the possibility of parole for the rape, torture and murder of 12-year-old Lola Daviet, marking the first time such a maximum penalty has been imposed on a woman in France since the abolition of capital punishment in 1981.

Dahbia Benkired was convicted of luring the girl to her sister's apartment in the 19th arrondissement [neighborhood] of Paris on Oct. 14, 2022, subjecting her to more than 90 minutes of sexual assault and violence with scissors and a box cutter, then binding her with duct tape around her head, leading to death by asphyxiation. The girl's mutilated body, with deep cuts to her neck and back and the numbers "0" and "1" scrawled on her feet in red marker, was discovered hours later in a plastic trunk abandoned in the courtyard of the building where Lola lived with her parents, who worked as caretakers there.
Lola, a student at Collège Georges Brassens and an aerobics champion, had been reported missing by her father, Johan Daviet, shortly after she failed to return home from school. Surveillance footage captured her entering the building around 3:15 p.m. with Benkired, who had been staying with her sister in the same complex despite being homeless, unemployed and under an expulsion order for overstaying a student visa.
The case, which horrified France and ignited fierce debates over immigration and public safety, saw Benkired give inconsistent accounts during the three-year investigation and trial, at times claiming the events were a dream or blaming a ghost. Prosecutors described the crimes as acts of "extreme cruelty," while the presiding judge emphasized the "monstrosity" of the violence and its lasting trauma on the victim's family.
Lola's mother, Delphine Daviet, and brother Thibault embraced in tears as the verdict was read, with Delphine stating, "We believed in justice and we got it," though adding that "it won't give us back our Lola." Johan Daviet died in 2024, a year after his daughter's killing.
Benkired, who faces at least 30 years before any review, joins a small number of offenders such as serial killer Michel Fourniret and Paris attacks survivor Salah Abdeslam in receiving the penalty, reserved for the most heinous cases under French law.
