Walsall Woman Stabbed to Death After Shift; Asylum Seeker Convicted of Murder
WALSALL, England (DailyKenn.com) — A 27-year-old hotel worker was fatally stabbed more than 20 times with a screwdriver as she walked to a train station following her late-night shift, in an attack prosecutors described as vicious and frenzied.

Rhiannon Skye Whyte, a mother from Walsall in England's West Midlands, had just finished her 11 p.m. shift at the Park Inn by Radisson hotel on Oct. 20, 2024, when she was followed and assaulted at nearby Bescot Stadium railway station. She was speaking on the phone with a childhood friend at the time, and the conversation abruptly turned to screams before the line went dead, the friend later testified.
Whyte suffered 23 stab wounds to the head and neck and was rushed to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Birmingham, where she was placed on life support. She died three days later, on Oct. 23, 2024, surrounded by family members, including her 5-year-old son.
Deng Chol Majek, a Sudanese alien who was seeking asylum who claimed to be 19 but was believed by authorities to be 27, was convicted Friday of Whyte's murder at Wolverhampton Crown Court. Majek had arrived in the United Kingdom via small boat in July 2024 and was housed at the same hotel where Whyte worked, cleaning rooms and serving meals to guests.
Prosecutors alleged the attack stemmed from a minor altercation earlier that evening, when Majek brushed past Whyte and a colleague during a dispute over a packet of biscuits at the hotel reception. Surveillance footage captured Majek following Whyte from the hotel to the station, where he stabbed her repeatedly before discarding her phone off a nearby bridge.
After the assault, Majek returned to the hotel appearing excited and unremorseful, later seen on video dancing and celebrating with friends in a car park amid flashing emergency lights from the crime scene. He then went shopping for alcohol.
During the trial, Majek denied involvement, insisting he had been outside the hotel at the time and had no prior issues with Whyte, whom he claimed never to have spoken with during his three months there. He attributed a possible age discrepancy on documents to an error made upon fleeing Sudan at age 16.
Forensic evidence overwhelmingly linked Majek to the crime: Whyte's blood was found on his jacket, sandals, a ring and under his fingernails, while his DNA appeared on swabs from her body. A station guard and a hotel employee who rushed to the scene after the friend's emergency call attempted to aid Whyte, but her injuries proved too severe.
Whyte's family described her as selfless, brave, quirky and funny, vowing to seek justice as she lay critically ill. Her mother, Siobhan Whyte, and sister Alex spoke of the heartbreak of informing her young son of the loss and the strength they drew from Rhiannon's positivity. "We promised her we'd get through this," Alex said.
Senior Crown Prosecutor Carla Harris called Whyte's death a tragic loss, emphasizing the family's devastation. British Transport Police offered condolences and requested privacy for grieving relatives.
The conviction caps a yearlong investigation that gripped the Walsall community and highlighted concerns over violence against women.
