PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. — A 65-year-old woman died after being stabbed in a bookstore here late Monday evening, prompting a swift police response that led to the arrest of a suspect on murder charges.

Authorities identified the victim as Rita B. Loncharich, who was attacked inside the Barnes & Noble at 11380 Legacy Ave. just before 8 p.m., according to Palm Beach Gardens police. Officers arrived at the scene following reports of a violent altercation and discovered Loncharich suffering from a severe stab wound. They provided immediate medical assistance before Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue transported her to a nearby hospital, where medical personnel pronounced her dead shortly afterward.

The sequence began when the suspect approached Loncharich in the store and inflicted the injury with a knife, police reported. He then immediately ran from the premises on foot, leaving behind a chaotic scene as shoppers and employees reacted to the sudden violence. Investigators pieced together initial details from security footage and statements gathered at the site.

Several people inside the bookstore at the time described the assailant to authorities, providing details that aided in his quick apprehension nearby without further confrontation. One witness recounted hearing screams and seeing the man bolt toward the exit, while another noted the victim's collapse near a display area. Police emphasized that the descriptions were crucial in locating the individual within hours of the attack.

The suspect, 40-year-old Antonio R. Moore, was taken into custody around 5:30 a.m. Tuesday and booked at the Palm Beach County Jail. Prosecutors charged him with first-degree premeditated murder, and a judge ordered him held without bond during an initial court appearance. Officials have not disclosed a motive for the crime, stating that the investigation remains active to explore any prior connections between Moore and Loncharich, though early indications suggest the act may have been random.

Residents in this affluent South Florida community expressed dismay over the incident, with some longtime locals calling it a jarring disruption to their sense of security. A shopper from a nearby town described feeling uneasy about visiting public spaces, saying the event shattered the peaceful atmosphere typically associated with a bookstore. Another community member voiced sympathy for Loncharich's loved ones and the staff who endured the trauma, highlighting concerns about unexpected dangers in everyday settings. A representative for the shopping complex where the store is located affirmed a commitment to bolstering safety measures in coordination with law enforcement.

Police urged anyone with additional information to contact them, as detectives continue to review evidence and interview those present.
