WILMINGTON, Del. — A Delaware state trooper died after a gunman opened fire inside a motor vehicles office, prompting a swift law enforcement response that ended with the shooter also dead, authorities said.
Delaware State Police Cpl. Matthew T. "Ty" Snook, 34, was on overtime detail at the Karen L. Johnson Division of Motor Vehicles in New Castle County when the attack began shortly after 2 p.m. on Dec. 23. According to police accounts, Snook was stationed near the reception area when Rahman Rose, 44, of Wilmington, walked in posing as a customer. Rose approached from behind and fired a handgun at Snook without warning, striking him multiple times.
Despite his wounds, Snook managed to shove a nearby DMV worker away from the line of fire and urged the employee to run to safety, officials reported. The trooper collapsed as the gunfire continued. Rose then permitted other patrons inside the building to exit before barricading himself within the facility.
Responding officers from multiple agencies, including New Castle County police, arrived within minutes and surrounded the site. As they advanced, Rose discharged several rounds toward them through the doors and windows. A county officer returned fire from outside, hitting Rose through a window. Both Snook and Rose were rushed to nearby Christiana Hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
A second state trooper suffered minor injuries not related to gunfire during the chaos, while two female civilians—a 40-year-old and a 35-year-old—received treatment for non-serious ailments, including shortness of breath in one case. Investigators from the Delaware State Police Homicide Unit took over the probe, but no motive for Rose's actions has been released. Since the suspect perished in the exchange, no criminal charges were filed.
Snook, a Hockessin resident and 10-year veteran who joined the force in 2015 after graduating from the police academy, was remembered by colleagues as a reliable and dedicated officer. A Delaware native, he attended Saint Mark's High School and wrestled at the University of Maryland before entering law enforcement. He leaves behind a wife and their 1-year-old daughter.
Gov. Matt Meyer condemned the violence as senseless and malicious during a news briefing the following day, lauding Snook's bravery for protecting others in his final moments. State Police Superintendent Col. William Crotty echoed the sentiment, calling Snook a steadfast partner to his fellow troopers and a pillar in his community. In the aftermath, all DMV locations across Delaware shuttered temporarily, with most reopening by the next week.
Local residents and first responders expressed shock and grief, with many gathering for vigils near the site. Fundraising efforts quickly emerged to aid Snook's family, drawing donations from across the region. Funeral services are set for the University of Delaware's athletic arena, where thousands are expected to pay respects to the fallen officer.
