ATHENS, Ga. — Authorities in Athens say a 26-year-old resident died from gunshot wounds after an early-morning encounter at a busy street corner, leading to the swift arrest of a man from a neighboring county.
Police responded to reports of a person lying in the road around 2:23 a.m. on Dec. 18 at the intersection of West Broad and Pulaski streets, according to the Athens-Clarke County Police Department. Officers discovered Anargyros Mantas suffering from multiple bullet injuries. Emergency crews rushed him to a nearby hospital, where medical staff pronounced him dead shortly after arrival.
Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators showed Mantas emerging from a parking area near Redeemer Presbyterian Church and approaching a silver or gray vehicle stopped at a traffic light on Pulaski Street, authorities reported. He moved to the passenger side first, then to the driver's door, which opened briefly as the occupant stepped out. The driver then got back inside, and a muzzle flash appeared from within the car before Mantas collapsed. The vehicle sped away eastward along Broad Street, police said.
By later that day, detectives had identified 22-year-old Jamarioun Clark of Madison as the primary suspect and secured warrants for his arrest. Clark, described by officials as a convicted felon, was taken into custody the following afternoon, Dec. 19, in Newton County with assistance from several law enforcement agencies, including the Morgan County Sheriff's Office, Madison Police Department, Covington Police Department, Newton County Sheriff's Office, FBI Safe Streets unit, and Georgia Bureau of Investigation.
Prosecutors charged Clark with felony murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime. Authorities have not disclosed a motive for the attack or any prior connection between Clark and Mantas, noting that the probe continues.
While no direct eyewitnesses have come forward in public statements, police urged anyone with information to contact Detective Christina Bradshaw. The shooting has prompted concerns among downtown residents and business owners about late-night safety in the area, with some locals expressing shock over the violence in a typically vibrant part of the city known for its university crowd and nightlife.
Mantas, known to friends as Cole, was remembered in an obituary as a young man who left a lasting impact on his community. His sudden death marks the latest in a series of violent incidents that have drawn scrutiny to public safety measures in Athens.
