SEAGOVILLE, Texas (DailyKenn.com) — A 39-year-old man died after being shot during an attempted robbery arranged through an online marketplace, prompting arrests and warnings about digital transactions.
Authorities reported that William Dean arranged to meet a prospective buyer on the evening of Dec. 2, 2024, to sell gemstone-encrusted watches he had listed on Facebook Marketplace. Police said Dean communicated with an account under the alias "Jerry John," which investigators later traced to a 17-year-old from Balch Springs. The meeting took place in the Seago Farms neighborhood, near a community park in the 600 block of Fountain Drive.
According to a police affidavit, the teen entered Dean's blue Hyundai sedan shortly after arrival. Witnesses described hearing a single gunshot moments later. Both individuals quickly left the vehicle, with Dean running about 60 feet toward a nearby gazebo before collapsing from a wound to his torso. The shooter fled on foot and entered a waiting gray Dodge Charger parked nearby, police said.
First responders arrived around 5:50 p.m. and found Dean conscious but gravely injured. Paramedics rushed him to Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, where medical personnel pronounced him dead later that evening, according to the Dallas County medical examiner's office.
Investigators gathered evidence from the scene, including jewelry, loose gemstones, a testing device, a spent 9mm shell casing, and an unfired round inside Dean's car. Surveillance video from the area captured the Charger's license plate, which authorities linked to 19-year-old William Young of DeSoto. Cellphone records placed Young, along with 20-year-old RJ Nathan Bonner and the juvenile suspect, near the location at the time of the incident, police stated.
Young, identified as the driver, cooperated with detectives and confirmed Bonner's presence as a front-seat passenger, according to arrest documents. The 17-year-old, named by authorities as Daquan Blanton, was pinpointed as the individual who entered Dean's vehicle and the primary suspect in the shooting.
Blanton remained at large for months until U.S. Marshals apprehended him in Dallas on March 9, 2025. He faces charges of capital murder, three counts of aggravated robbery, and two counts of theft. Bonner was arrested earlier and charged with capital murder in the commission of a felony, held on a $1 million bond. Young faces related charges for his role as the getaway driver, though specifics were not immediately disclosed.
Residents in Seagoville expressed shock over the violence in a typically quiet park area, with some voicing concerns about the risks of in-person sales from online platforms. Local officials urged the community to report suspicious activity and emphasized meeting in public, well-lit spots for such exchanges. Police continue to seek additional tips via a hotline at 972-287-2999, noting the case highlights broader dangers in digital commerce.
