JACKSONVILLE, Ill. (AP) — Woman Killed in Valentine's Day Shooting; Local Woman Faces Murder Charges

Authorities in central Illinois arrested a 23-year-old woman one day after a fatal shooting that claimed the life of a 31-year-old resident, marking a swift development in a case that has shaken the quiet community of Jacksonville.

The sequence of events began on the evening of Feb. 14, when Jacksonville police received a call reporting gunfire in the 800 block of West Chambers Street shortly after 5:40 p.m. Responding officers discovered Marcquila Harris suffering from a severe gunshot injury. Emergency personnel rushed her to Jacksonville Memorial Hospital, where medical staff pronounced her dead despite efforts to save her, according to Morgan County Coroner Marcy Patterson.

Investigators from multiple agencies, including the Jacksonville Police Department, Illinois State Police, Morgan County Sheriff's Office, and the county state's attorney's office, worked through the night to piece together evidence. Police Commander Kyle Chumley reported that the probe led to the identification of a suspect by the following morning.

On Feb. 15, Marissa Teubner turned herself in at the police station, authorities said. She was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Morgan County Jail. An autopsy performed on Feb. 16 confirmed Harris's cause of death as the gunshot wound, Patterson added.

Prosecutors filed formal charges against Teubner on Feb. 18, accusing her of three counts of first-degree murder and one count of aggravated discharge of a firearm. Court documents allege Teubner fired at Harris without justification, intending to cause fatal harm. During a court appearance that day, a judge appointed a public defender for Teubner and approved the state's request to detain her pending trial, citing the seriousness of the offenses. A preliminary hearing is set for March 3.

While specific motives remain undisclosed, police described the incident as isolated and not posing an ongoing threat to the public. They urged anyone with additional information to contact investigators or a local crime tip line.

Accounts from those near the scene painted a picture of sudden chaos in an otherwise calm residential area. Neighbors reported hearing sharp pops resembling fireworks, followed by sirens, though no direct eyewitness descriptions of the confrontation have been released by officials. One resident, speaking anonymously to authorities, noted the rapid police response helped contain the situation quickly.

The tragedy has elicited grief and concern among Jacksonville residents, a town of about 18,000 where such violence is rare. Community members expressed sorrow online and in local gatherings, with many sending condolences to Harris's family. Friends remembered her as a kind individual, and a visitation was planned at a local funeral home. Local leaders called for unity, emphasizing the need for vigilance in addressing interpersonal conflicts. As the case proceeds, residents hope for justice while reflecting on the fragility of everyday safety.
