FERGUSON, Mo. (DailyKenn.com) — A 17-year-old boy has been charged in the fatal shooting of a rideshare driver who authorities say was an unintended victim caught in a sudden exchange of gunfire last month.
Shannon O'Brien, 28, of St. Louis, was working her shift on Jan. 30 when she dropped off three male passengers in a parking lot in the 1700 block of Windward Court shortly before 4 p.m., according to police. Moments after the men exited her vehicle, a shootout erupted between them and others in the area, investigators said.
Ferguson police officers arrived at the scene following reports of shots fired and discovered O'Brien inside her car, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency responders pronounced her dead there, officials reported. Detectives from the St. Louis County Police Department, who took over the investigation at Ferguson's request, determined that O'Brien had no connection to the dispute and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Witnesses described a chaotic scene. One neighbor, who spoke on condition of anonymity, recalled hearing the gunfire begin almost immediately after the passengers got out. "It was just like a war," she said, adding that the men appeared armed with large weapons. Others in the area reported counting more than two dozen shots, leaving O'Brien's car pocked with bullet holes and shattered glass scattered across the lot.
The investigation moved quickly. On Feb. 1, authorities detained a 17-year-old male suspect in connection with the incident. Prosecutors in St. Louis County Family Court formally charged him on Feb. 9 with second-degree murder, armed criminal action and unlawful use of a weapon. Police have not indicated whether they are seeking additional suspects, but they urged anyone with information to contact them or CrimeStoppers anonymously.
O'Brien's death has shaken her family and the broader community. Relatives remembered her as a compassionate advocate for social justice, particularly for immigrants and refugees, and someone who cherished animals—she had been planning to adopt a new pet just days before the tragedy. "She was such a loving person who gave so much effort to improve herself and help those around her," her family said in a statement. Her former high school cross-country coach in Edwardsville, Illinois, where she grew up, called her a bright and well-rounded individual, expressing shock at the loss.
Neighbors in Ferguson voiced outrage and sorrow over the violence. "It's totally unacceptable and insane," one resident said. "Our community needs to do better." Another added condolences for O'Brien's loved ones, noting, "That is so sad. She was really young." Calls for justice echoed among locals, with some praying that all involved would be held accountable.
A celebration of O'Brien's life was held on Feb. 7 at a funeral home in Edwardsville, followed by a graveside service. Her family requested donations to organizations supporting animal welfare and immigrant services in her honor.
