BREWTON, Ala. (DailyKenn.com) — Authorities in Escambia County arrested a 45-year-old woman after she admitted to shooting and killing a 27-year-old pregnant resident during an early morning confrontation at a rural home.

The sequence began shortly before 6 a.m. on March 6, when emergency dispatchers received a 911 report of a gunshot injury at a residence in the 3400 block of McGougin Road, just outside Brewton. Responding deputies from the Escambia County Sheriff's Office, along with officers from the Brewton Police Department, arrived at the scene and entered the house.

Inside, they discovered Anasty Raine Brown, a local from East Brewton, lying unresponsive with a single gunshot wound. Medical personnel pronounced her dead at the location, according to sheriff's reports. An autopsy later confirmed the cause of death as the shooting injury, and forensic examination revealed that Brown was in the early stages of pregnancy.

Investigators quickly focused on Renotta Renee Seltzer, who was present at the home. Sheriff Heath Jackson stated that Seltzer provided a voluntary confession during initial questioning, acknowledging her role in the fatal act. Deputies recovered five firearms from the property, noting that Seltzer, as a previously convicted felon, was prohibited from possessing weapons under state law.

Seltzer was taken into custody without incident and booked into the Escambia County Detention Center. Prosecutors initially filed a murder charge against her. However, court records indicate that due to Brown's pregnancy, officials plan to elevate the case to capital murder when presenting it to a grand jury.

In a preliminary hearing, District Judge James Coale ruled that Seltzer would remain jailed without bond, invoking Aniah's Law, which permits denial of bail for defendants accused of serious violent offenses, particularly those involving vulnerable victims. Authorities have not disclosed a specific motive for the shooting, but they described the event as isolated, with no ongoing threat to the public.

The investigation remains active, with forensic teams processing evidence from the scene. Brown's death marks the first homicide reported in the Brewton area this year, according to county records. She is survived by family members, including a young child.

No eyewitnesses to the actual shooting have come forward in public statements, but the 911 caller, whose identity has not been released, provided details that led responders directly to the address. Sheriff's officials emphasized that Seltzer's admission aligned with physical evidence collected at the home.

Prosecutors expect to formalize the upgraded charges in the coming weeks, pending grand jury review. If convicted of capital murder, Seltzer could face life imprisonment or the death penalty under Alabama statutes.
