GUTHRIE, Ky. — A 24-year-old man faces murder charges after authorities say he fatally shot another man during a confrontation tied to a child custody matter, leaving one person dead and a woman injured in a residential neighborhood.
Kentucky State Police reported that the incident began shortly after 9 a.m. on March 8 when Jerrell Edmonds arrived at a home on Springmont Circle seeking his wife and young son. According to court records, Edmonds spotted his wife's vehicle parked outside the residence belonging to Evan Hall, whom documents describe as the woman's boyfriend.
Hall emerged from the house and approached Edmonds in the street, initiating a verbal exchange over arrangements for the couple's 3-year-old child, police said. As Hall turned to head back toward the property, Edmonds stepped out of his truck carrying a firearm, leading to a physical altercation.
During the scuffle, Edmonds fired three shots at Hall, striking him multiple times, according to investigators. Hall collapsed in the roadway, where responding officers later found him unresponsive with gunshot injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Following the gunfire, Edmonds returned the weapon to his vehicle and entered the home in an attempt to take his son, court documents state. Inside, he allegedly struck his wife in the face, causing a split lip and dislodging a tooth. The woman, identified as the second victim, sustained minor injuries but did not require hospitalization.
Emergency dispatchers fielded multiple calls around 9:20 a.m. reporting a man down in the street with apparent bullet wounds, including one placed by Edmonds himself, authorities noted. Callers described discovering the victim lying motionless on the pavement, prompting a swift response from state troopers and local deputies.
Upon arrival, officers took Edmonds into custody without further incident. A search revealed marijuana in his possession, police added.
Edmonds, of Elkton, has been charged with murder in Hall's death, fourth-degree assault for the attack on his wife, and possession of marijuana. He remains held in the Todd County Detention Center on a $1.5 million bond, with a preliminary court appearance set for March 16.
The investigation continues under the direction of Kentucky State Police Detective Jacob Stephens. Authorities have urged anyone with additional information to contact the agency's Post 2 at 270-676-3313.
Hall, a Guthrie resident originally from Minnesota, leaves behind family including parents, siblings, and a young son of his own.
