CHICAGO — An 18-year-old freshman at Loyola University Chicago died after a masked man approached her group and fired a single shot on a beach pier just blocks from campus early Thursday.
Sheridan Gorman was walking with three friends around 1:30 a.m. March 19 near the end of the pier at Tobey Prinz Beach in the 1000 block of West Pratt Boulevard when the attacker, dressed in black clothing and wearing a ski mask, emerged from nearby brush and produced a handgun, Chicago police said.
The gunman discharged the weapon in the group’s direction. Gorman suffered a gunshot wound to the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her companions, who scattered in different directions to seek cover, returned moments later and discovered her lying face down on the pier. No one else was injured.
A single shell casing was recovered about 40 feet from where she fell. Witnesses told investigators the assailant fled on foot immediately after the shooting. One friend present described the attack as appearing random, with the group simply in the wrong place at the wrong time and only one shot fired.
Police said Gorman was not the intended target and have described the incident as a random act of violence. The suspect remains at large, and no arrests have been made. No charges have been filed. Detectives from Chicago Police Area 3 are leading the homicide investigation in coordination with university campus safety and are seeking any information that could identify the shooter.
Gorman, a recent high school graduate from Yorktown, New York, had moved to Chicago months earlier to begin her studies. She was out with friends at the popular lakefront spot when the attack occurred.
