OLATHE, Kan. — A 27-year-old Olathe man has been charged with attempted first-degree murder after prosecutors say he slashed a woman in the face and neck with a knife during a random attack at a local park.

The stabbing took place around noon Thursday at Two Trails Park as families enjoyed the spring break afternoon. Jamie Trumpp, 38, a choir teacher in the Olathe school district, was at a shelter area of the park with her three children and other relatives when the assault occurred.

Authorities say Kwan Noble Trezvant walked up to Trumpp and cut her with the knife in what police described as a completely unprovoked incident. The pair had no prior relationship or connection, according to investigators.

Following the attack, Trezvant walked briskly away from the crowd and then ran into a nearby neighborhood, witnesses told police.

Mark Moore, a safety trainer with a local bus company who had just arrived in the park parking lot to train a new driver, heard the disturbance and sprang into action. He called for emergency assistance over his radio and retrieved first aid materials from his vehicle. When he reached Trumpp, another bystander — believed to be a nurse — was already using a towel to apply pressure to the wound on the victim’s neck.

Moore noted the location of the injury near critical blood vessels, highlighting how it could easily have proven fatal.

Trumpp was rushed to a hospital with serious injuries but officials say she is expected to survive.

Johnson County prosecutors filed the attempted murder charge against Trezvant the following day. The complaint alleges he acted intentionally and with premeditation to kill but failed. He remains in custody on a $500,000 bond.
