CHICAGO — Four people are being sought for questioning in the fatal beating of a 25-year-old man who was discovered unresponsive on a Northwest Side street corner after an altercation at a nearby tavern.
Alexander “Xander” Kazanowski was found lying face down shortly before 3:20 a.m. on March 24 in the 3900 block of West Belmont Avenue in the Avondale neighborhood. A passerby discovered him with severe head injuries. Paramedics rushed him to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition for several days before dying on March 28.
The Cook County medical examiner’s office ruled the death a homicide caused by blunt-force trauma to the head from an assault.
Chicago police said investigators believe the confrontation began inside the Tune-Up bar at 3810 W. Belmont Avenue, roughly one block from where Kazanowski was found. Employees told authorities he was asked to leave after making several comments that prompted a dispute. Surveillance video released by police captured four individuals — three men and a woman — walking into the bar shortly before the incident. Detectives suspect people connected to that encounter may have followed Kazanowski as he walked home.
The four people sought for questioning have not been identified or charged. Descriptions released by authorities list the men as African American: one wearing a black jacket, black baseball cap and blue jeans; another in a black jacket, white hooded sweatshirt and black pants; the third in a blue jacket, blue jeans and brown winter hat. The woman is described as Asian and was wearing a black jacket and white pants at the time.
No arrests have been made, and police have not released further details on what immediately preceded the assault. Grand Central Area detectives are leading the investigation and continue to review video and interview potential witnesses.
Cook County Crime Stoppers is offering a reward of up to $10,000 for information leading to an arrest. Tips can be submitted anonymously.
