WILMINGTON, N.C. — Lance Corporal Daniel Montano, a 21-year-old U.S. Marine stationed at Camp Lejeune, died Monday from stab wounds inflicted during a large street brawl in downtown Wilmington.

Officers arrived in the 100 block of North Front Street shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday, April 5, following reports of several fights breaking out in the area. Amid the disorder, two men suffered stab wounds in a single confrontation. Emergency responders transported both victims to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries.

Montano, assigned as an inventory management specialist with the 1st Battalion, 2nd Marines Regiment, succumbed to his wounds approximately 36 hours later on April 6. The second victim survived after sustaining life-threatening injuries. Montano, originally from San Bernardino, California, had enlisted in October 2024, joined his unit in March 2025 and earned promotion to lance corporal in December 2025.

No arrests have been made and no charges have been filed in connection with the stabbing. Police have circulated surveillance images of a person of interest described as a medium-build adult male wearing a light-colored fleece-lined denim jacket, light denim pants, a pink shirt and white sneakers featuring blue and red accents. The individual may also have worn a dark blue head covering that allowed long hair to be visible underneath.

Video footage from the scene has been obtained by investigators, though no specific accounts from witnesses have been released publicly. Authorities continue seeking tips from anyone who may have information about the person shown in the images or events leading to the stabbings.

The incident happened during the Easter weekend in a busy downtown district known for nighttime activity.

Montano’s family has described him as a dedicated service member who brought energy and warmth to those around him.
