Three Milwaukee teenagers face charges in the April 14 shooting death of 35-year-old David Krause, who was killed during an attempted armed robbery in the city’s Harbor District on 414 Day.
Authorities say Krause was in the Walker's Point neighborhood that Tuesday evening, taking part in the annual area-code celebration, when heavy storms rolled through the city. Seeking cover from the weather, he ended up in an alley near South First Street and East Greenfield Avenue shortly before 7:45 p.m.
According to prosecutors, a group of teenagers approached Krause and tried to rob him at gunpoint. One member of the group opened fire during the confrontation, striking Krause. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Police described the shooting as stemming from the botched robbery attempt, with investigators determining that multiple teens participated while another pulled the trigger.
Milwaukee police began identifying suspects within days. A 14-year-old boy was arrested on April 20. Two more juveniles — a 15-year-old boy and a 16-year-old girl — were taken into custody on April 24. A fourth suspect has been identified but has not yet been located.
In juvenile court, the 14-year-old was charged with felony murder, armed robbery and attempted armed robbery as a party to the crime. Prosecutors told the court the teen was part of the group traveling in a stolen vehicle and that at least one firearm was involved in the incident. Officials said co-actors named another member of the group as the shooter; the 14-year-old himself was not found in possession of a gun. A juvenile court commissioner ordered the teen held in secure detention, citing the violent nature of the allegations.
The other two arrested teenagers are expected to face similar charges as the case moves forward. Police continue to ask anyone with information about the fourth suspect to contact Milwaukee police or Crime Stoppers.
The incident remains under active investigation by the Milwaukee Police Department.
