A 10-year veteran of the Chicago Police Department was killed and his partner gravely injured Saturday when a suspect they were guarding inside a North Side hospital produced a hidden handgun and opened fire during a medical scan, authorities said.
The incident began around 8 a.m. when Alphanso Talley, 26, and an accomplice allegedly robbed a Family Dollar store in the Albany Park neighborhood. Talley struck an employee with a pistol, took cash along with the victim’s wallet and keys, and fled on a scooter, police said. Officers located and arrested him shortly before 9 a.m. using a tracking device on the stolen items.
Talley complained of feeling ill and claimed he had swallowed narcotics, prompting officers to summon an ambulance. He was transported under guard to Endeavor Health Swedish Hospital at 5140 N. California Ave. for evaluation.
Hospital security wanded Talley upon arrival and he was escorted at all times by the two officers while his clothes were removed and he was given a hospital gown. A blanket was placed over his lap as staff prepared him for a CT scan shortly before 11 a.m.
Prosecutors detailed in Monday’s court hearing that officers removed Talley’s handcuffs for the procedure. He then reached under the blanket, pulled out a 10-millimeter handgun, and fired. One round struck Officer John Bartholomew, 38, in the head; another hit the second officer, a 57-year-old 21-year veteran, in the face. Bartholomew was pronounced dead later that afternoon. The wounded officer remains in critical condition.
Talley fled the hospital after shooting out a window and was recaptured minutes later in the 2600 block of West Carmen Avenue, where he was found hiding under a porch, still wearing the hospital gown and in possession of the gun.
In Cook County court Monday, Talley was charged with first-degree murder, attempted first-degree murder, attempted armed kidnapping, multiple counts of aggravated battery of a peace officer, escape, armed robbery, unlawful possession of a weapon by a felon, and more than a dozen additional felonies. He was ordered held without bond.
