Summary: Margaret Swan, 66, a grandmother and great-grandmother from Atlanta, was fatally stabbed while riding alone on a MARTA train on May 30, 2026. The 25-year-old suspect, John Elijah Matthews, was arrested immediately at the scene by transit police after witnesses identified him. He faces murder charges in what authorities call a random attack. Swan, who regularly used public transit, died at the scene near Oakland City Station.

ATLANTA, Ga. — A routine train ride turned deadly for a longtime Atlanta resident who depended on public transit to get around the city. Margaret Swan, 66, a devoted mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, lost her life in what authorities describe as a completely random attack aboard a MARTA train on Saturday, May 30, 2026.
Swan regularly rode the trains for transportation and was sitting by herself in the car when the incident occurred near the Oakland City Station around 11:25 a.m. Witnesses on board saw the sudden violence and quickly alerted MARTA police officers who were already patrolling the area. Officers moved in fast, arresting 25-year-old John Elijah Matthews right at the scene after passengers identified him. A knife was recovered nearby.
MARTA police charged Matthews with murder. Investigators say he had no previous connection to Swan and approached her without warning. Emergency responders tried to save her, but she died at the scene. The Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office later confirmed her identity.
For many in Atlanta, this case highlights how everyday travel can carry unexpected risks. Swan had used the system confidently for years, relying on it to visit family or run errands. Her loved ones remember her as someone who stayed active and independent well into her later years. The quick response by transit officers prevented the suspect from fleeing, thanks in large part to clear accounts from those who saw what happened.
Authorities continue to review surveillance video and talk with witnesses to piece together the full sequence. At this point, they have not identified any motive beyond the apparent randomness of the act. Matthews remains in custody as the case moves forward in the justice system.
This tragedy serves as a sobering reminder for riders across the city. While most commutes pass without issue, moments like this prompt many to stay aware of their surroundings and report anything unusual. Atlanta officials have not released further details on security adjustments, but the swift arrest shows that MARTA police can act decisively when needed.
Friends and family are now focused on honoring Swan's memory and supporting one another through their grief. Her life touched multiple generations, and those who knew her best say her warmth and reliability defined her.
Suspects are considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.
