Let’s change gears today.

Rub the magic lamp and, when the genie pops out, ask for this wish: Make all my problems disappear. Don’t have a magic lamp? No problem. We can be our own genies. Let’s talk about it.

One lesson I learned during my years as a Baptist pastor was to keep a mirror facing me on the pulpit. It wasn’t an act of vanity; it was a reminder that every sermon applied to me as much as to the congregation. Instead of saying, “You need to...”, I would say, “We need to...” That same perspective is reflected in this article.

I also learned to think of problems as challenges. Think about that for a moment. We can get rid of all our problems immediately — right here and now — by rethinking. We can say it our loud. “I have no problems. I only have challenges.” Mountains become challenges to conquer! Obstacles become opportunities. We are our own genies. No magic lamp required.

We can live life filled with strength and personal fulfillment. No matter the difficulties we face right now — and we all have them — we already possess everything we need to transform those problems into challenges. There is power in perspective. It’s not about denying problems—it’s about facing them with resilience and the deep conviction that we have the mental fortitude to tackle every challenge that life throws at us.

Dr. Lisa Williams, a black entrepreneur, was the founder and CEO of World of EPI (Entertainment, Publishing, and Inspiration). She “walked through the valley of business death. Bankruptcy. Loneliness. Depression,” according to Forbes.com. Granted, I won’t be buying any of her multicultural dolls, but stories like hers remind us that our perspective shapes our destiny.

“But now she sits with a $5M company poised to launch to the next level,” Forbes reported. “[S]he plans to crush it moving forward.” I wish her and her dolls the best.

Williams story reminds us that we have choices. We can shift our minds into neutral and allow circumstances to take control. Alternately, we can shift our minds into gear, grab the steering wheel, and step on the gas.

Rather than sinking into despair, we can choose to see failure as important feedback. We can focus on the lessons learned, refine our strategies, and drive.  When we shift from asking “Why me?” to “What can I learn and how can I grow?”, new opportunities seems to appear out of nowhere.

Settled science

Don’t take my word for it. Scientific research strongly confirms the benefits of this approach. Studies link a confident outlook to longer life spans, reduced depression, stronger immune function, and greater overall happiness. Power thinkers tend to recover faster from hardships and experience higher life satisfaction.

Imagine looking forward to difficulties so we can have the satisfaction of conquering them!

Martin Seligman’s pioneering research on learned confidence shows we can train our minds to interpret events more constructively. By viewing setbacks as temporary and specific rather than permanent and all-encompassing, we develop remarkable emotional strength and achieve more in life.

It’s call neuroplasticityWe can literally change our minds.

Barbara Fredrickson’s broaden-and-build theory explains how positive emotions expand our awareness, spark creativity, and help us build lasting inner resources for handling life’s toughest moments.

Compounding actions

We can begin this transformation immediately with simple habits: Each morning, write down three things we’re grateful for. Reframe obstacles as chances to grow.

This is important: We need to speak to ourselves with the same kindness we’d offer a close friend or family member. The truth is, many of us speak more kindly to our cats than we do to ourselves. (And, for the record, I have no cats. Sorry, cat lovers, but I have asthma.)

These small daily choices create powerful, compounding results.

We have everything we need to thrive. Our futures are loaded with possibilities. But we’ve got to embrace the power that nature has endowed in our minds. When we, take that next step forward, we can watch our lives unfold in wonderful new ways. We’ve got this!
