Stephanie Irons has something in common with Iryna Zarutska. Both were fatally stabbed at the age of 23. Irons was a psychology graduate with plans for a doctorate, lost her life on October 21, 2025, after her former colleague would not accept their romantic relationship had ended.

Adedapo Adegbola, 40, had arrived in the UK from Nigeria in 2022. The pair met while working together in adult support roles. Their connection quickly became romantic but remained short-lived. Irons decided to move on, yet Adegbola struggled with the breakup. Court details later revealed he bought knives shortly before heading to her home in Mapperley that October evening. He attacked her as she stepped outside briefly, then forced entry and stabbed her in the neck. Paramedics arrived to find her beyond help.

One has to wonder why Adegbola was working in the field of psychology if he could not endure a break up without killing the one he "loved."

Friends and colleagues grew worried when Irons stopped responding. Their concern prompted a welfare check that led police to discover the devastating scene inside her home. Adegbola later turned himself in to authorities the following day after traveling to Hull. He admitted to the murder at Nottingham Crown Court in late January 2026. On February 5, 2026, a judge sentenced him to life imprisonment with a minimum term before parole eligibility.

Irons had already earned degrees in clinical psychology and hoped to make a positive difference through her work. Those who knew her described a young woman full of potential, driven by a desire to build a kinder world. Her death cut short not only personal dreams but also the contributions she aimed to offer her community through mental health support.

This case highlights how quickly personal relationships can escalate into tragedy when one party refuses to let go. Brief romances that end amicably for one person can leave the other consumed by obsession. Adegbola's actions robbed a young woman of her safety in her own home and devastated her family, who remember her as a shining light with so much ahead.

Authorities emphasize the importance of recognizing warning signs in post-relationship behavior and seeking help early. Support services exist for those struggling with breakups, as well as for anyone feeling unsafe. In the UK, organizations like the National Domestic Abuse Helpline offer confidential guidance.

The justice system delivered a clear message through the life sentence: such violence carries permanent consequences. Yet for Irons' loved ones, no sentence can restore what was taken on that October night in Nottinghamshire.
