JOLIET, Ill. — An 80-year-old man working at a local gas station ended up in the hospital after authorities say a much younger man struck him repeatedly with a wooden stick during a sudden argument.

The attack happened on June 30 in Joliet, Illinois, just before noon. Police responded quickly to reports of a battery at the station and found the longtime employee inside with a bleeding head wound. Paramedics treated him at the scene before transporting him to a hospital for further care.

According to investigators, the confrontation escalated fast. Surveillance video captured the 31-year-old suspect entering the store and immediately clashing with the victim. The older man grabbed a stick in self-defense, but police say the suspect knocked him down, seized the object, and hit him multiple times in the head and face. The attacker then ran off on foot, leaving the injured employee behind.

Joliet officers recovered the stick believed to be the weapon and began piecing together the evidence. Detectives reviewed the footage and identified Jeffrey Bohn as the suspect. Bohn, who is listed as homeless, remained at large for several days while the investigation continued.

On July 4, officers located and arrested Bohn without incident. He now faces three counts of aggravated battery. Authorities transported him to the Will County Adult Detention Facility, where he remains in custody. Bohn is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

Cases like this draw attention to the vulnerabilities faced by older workers who stay on the job to support themselves. Many seniors continue in customer-facing roles well into their later years, often dealing with unpredictable interactions in public spaces. While most encounters remain routine, incidents that turn physical highlight how quickly situations can spiral when tempers flare.

Police credited prompt response and solid video evidence for helping track down the suspect relatively quickly. The case remains active as prosecutors move forward with the charges.

This situation serves as a sober reminder that everyday workplaces carry risks, especially for employees without the physical advantages younger people might have. Local law enforcement continues to emphasize quick reporting and thorough investigations to hold individuals accountable.
