CLEARWATER, Fla. — A young man who took part in a random nighttime attack that ended a father's bike ride now faces decades in prison, closing a painful chapter in a case that started with smashed car windows and escalated into deadly violence.
Savonne Morrison, 21, received a 45-year sentence this week in Pinellas County. A jury convicted him of manslaughter earlier in 2026 for the death of 49-year-old Jeffrey Chapman. The judge added 15 years for the manslaughter conviction and 30 years for violating probation from a prior carjacking case, in which Morrison had run over a victim with the stolen vehicle.
The fatal incident occurred shortly after midnight on Oct. 21, 2022, on Clearwater Beach. Chapman, riding his bicycle home, crossed paths with Morrison and another man during what authorities described as a crime spree across Pinellas County. The pair had already damaged vehicles and assaulted an elderly man with a tire iron earlier that night.
Prosecutors presented evidence showing the men chased Chapman down. One knocked him off his bike, and both took part in the beating with the tire iron. Chapman died from the injuries. His co-defendant, Jermaine Bennett, pleaded guilty and received life in prison. Morrison's jury opted for the lesser manslaughter charge rather than first-degree murder.
Background of repeated offenses
At the time of the attack, Morrison was already on probation. His criminal record included serious violence, yet he remained free in the community. The case highlights how prior leniency can intersect with new, tragic events. Florida law treats those who aid or participate in such crimes seriously, even if they did not deliver every blow.
Chapman had simply been enjoying a late ride near his home when the random encounter changed everything. The attack stood out for its senseless nature—no robbery, no dispute, just sudden brutality on a public road.
Sentencing brings some measure of accountability after years of court proceedings. Morrison's earlier trial featured video evidence, text messages, and testimony that painted a picture of two individuals moving through the night, escalating their actions from property damage to assaults on strangers.
