EL PASO, Texas — A minor parking dispute outside a West El Paso pharmacy turned deadly for a 32-year-old former U.S. Marine who was visiting family from his new life abroad. Christopher Brandon Steven died on July 2, 2026, after an argument escalated inside a Walgreens store.

Shortly after 11:30 p.m. that night, Steven arrived at the store with his mother and sister. A verbal disagreement over a handicap parking space sparked the confrontation in the lot. Authorities say 26-year-old Nicholas Emanuel Wells, an Uber driver, followed Steven inside. What began as words turned physical. Wells pulled a handgun during the scuffle and fired three times, striking Steven in the abdomen.

Steven collapsed after the first shot. Court documents indicate Wells fired twice more while Steven lay on the floor. Officers arrived taking Wells into custody outside the store, and recovered two firearms. Steven was rushed to University Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. Wells admitted to the shooting and faces a murder charge. He remains held in the El Paso County Detention Facility on a $350,000 bond.

Investigators reviewed surveillance video and witness accounts that contradicted Wells' self-defense claims. The suspect told detectives he acted only after Steven continued advancing, yet footage reportedly showed a different sequence.

Steven, a proud El Paso native and Austin High School graduate, had served in the Marine Corps until his medical retirement in 2025. He built a new life in Japan after meeting his wife, Anna, during a deployment in Okinawa. The couple married in 2023 and were creating a life together overseas. Friends and family described him as someone quick to lend a hand, always ready to support those around him.

A GoFundMe supports his widow and relatives with travel and arrangements from Japan.

The incident reminds us that we live in a world with psychopaths who ignore rules and are impulsive.
