ROWLETT, Texas — Nearly three months after 18-year-old Daniel Erving drowned in Lake Ray Hubbard, authorities arrested a 19-year-old acquaintance on evidence tampering charges, prompting the dead teen's family to demand a deeper look into what happened that April afternoon.

On April 13, Erving left home with Lucas Roper and a 17-year-old to fish and swim at the lake. The trio jumped from a bridge into the water. Only Erving failed to resurface. Searchers located his body four days later on April 17. The Dallas County Medical Examiner ruled the death an accidental drowning.

Roper, of Sachse, faces a felony charge of tampering with physical evidence with intent to impair a human corpse. Police arrested him July 9; he posted a $10,000 bond and was released. A juvenile suspect also received charges in the case.

According to the arrest affidavit, Roper and the younger teen left the scene without calling for help. They tossed Erving’s clothing into a treeline near the bridge and later threw his cellphone from a moving vehicle. Detectives recovered both items. Roper also deleted text messages and calls with Erving from his own phone, later telling investigators he worried about getting in trouble.

The decisions to discard belongings and drive away instead of seeking immediate assistance have raised sharp questions from Erving’s loved ones. At a recent news conference, family members, including his mother, called for murder charges and an independent investigation. They argue the actions suggest more than a simple accident.

Authorities have not filed any homicide-related charges. Dallas police continue to investigate. The case highlights how evidence handling in the critical hours after an incident can shape public trust in the process, even when the medical cause points to tragedy rather than foul play.

Erving, a Sachse High School senior, had been looking forward to everyday teen plans that day. His sudden loss left his family grappling with both grief and lingering doubts about the full story.

As the legal proceedings move forward against Roper, attention remains on whether additional charges could follow and how the justice system addresses cases where actions after a death complicate the search for truth.
