FLINT, Michigan — A routine morning walk to the school bus stop ended in tragedy for a 16-year-old girl more than four decades ago. For years, her family lived with unanswered questions.

Now, modern science has finally provided a name.

Sheri Jo Elliott left her home in Flint early on November 16, 1983. She never made it to Carman High School. Four days later, her body was discovered in a rural area of Saginaw County. She had been sexually assaulted and shot multiple times. Investigators determined she likely remained alive in a ditch where she was discarded for several days after she vanished.

The case quickly went cold. Limited forensic tools at the time left detectives with few solid leads despite a thorough search. Sheri Jo’s loved ones waited through more than 40 years of silence.

That changed in 2023 when Michigan State Police reopened the investigation. Detectives turned to advanced DNA analysis, working with specialists at Othram Labs and students from the Western Michigan University Cold Case Program. The team reexamined old evidence using forensic-grade genome sequencing. The process generated a profile that pointed to a suspect.

Authorities identified Roni Collins, a 75-year-old man from Grand Blanc who lived in the area at the time of the crime. He would have been 33 years old in 1983 and worked as a traveling musician. Before police could question him, Collins died by suicide in January 2026. DNA collected during his autopsy provided the conclusive match to evidence from Sheri Jo’s case.

Michigan State Police announced the resolution in April 2026. While Collins cannot face charges, officials say the identification offers long-overdue clarity for Elliott’s family. The breakthrough highlights how far forensic techniques have come since the early 1980s. What once seemed impossible can now deliver results years later.

Police have linked Collins to similar murders of white girls in Michigan.

Sheri Jo was remembered as a shy, intelligent teenager who enjoyed babysitting. Her death left a permanent mark on those who knew her. Cases like hers show both the lasting pain of unsolved crimes and the quiet determination that keeps investigations alive across decades.
