A police response to a reported gunshot in Brunswick, Georgia, early Sunday, Aug. 16, 2026, quickly turned into a homicide investigation. Within minutes, officers had detained a man on foot and located a second man suffering from a fatal gunshot wound.
The victim was identified as 43-year-old James Randall Myers of Richmond Hill, Georgia. Officers and emergency medical personnel found Myers after responding to the area shortly after midnight. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police identified the person detained after the brief foot chase as 20-year-old Jason Middlebrooks of Brunswick. He now faces several charges stemming from the incident, including murder, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm by a convicted felon, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime, theft by taking of a firearm and theft by taking of a motor vehicle.
Investigators said two pieces of stolen property recovered with Middlebrooks — a firearm and a vehicle — were not believed to be connected to the shooting itself. That distinction remains part of the ongoing investigation as authorities work to determine exactly what led to Myers' death.
The incident began when Brunswick officers in the area heard what they believed was a gunshot. They moved toward nearby locations to investigate and soon encountered a man running from the area. Officers pursued him on foot and took him into custody.
Their subsequent investigation led them to Myers, who had suffered a gunshot wound. The discovery shifted the response from a possible disturbance or weapons call into a deadly shooting investigation.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation is assisting the Brunswick Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division. The Glynn County Police Department's patrol unit has also provided assistance.
Authorities have not publicly released a detailed motive or explained what may have brought Myers and Middlebrooks into the same location. Investigators have so far focused on establishing the sequence of events, identifying those involved and determining the circumstances surrounding the shooting.
