For Lauren McCluskey, Oct. 22, 2018, began as an ordinary Monday at the University of Utah. By the end of the night, the 21-year-old student-athlete was dead, killed outside her residence hall in Salt Lake City, Utah, by a man she had briefly dated.

McCluskey was shot and killed by her ex-boyfriend, Melvin Rowland, on October 22, 2018, at the University of Utah campus in Salt Lake City. Rowland, a 37-year-old registered sex offender, died by suicide early the next morning as police closed in on him.

McCluskey was a senior studying communication and a member of the university’s track and field team. She had built a life around school and athletics, with graduation approaching the following spring. Her future, however, was cut short after a short relationship turned dangerous.

McCluskey had met the man in September 2018 and began dating him. The relationship lasted about a month. During that time, she discovered that he had not been truthful about important parts of his background, including his identity, age and criminal history. She ended the relationship Oct. 9.

That decision did not end the contact between them.

According to the University of Utah’s account of the case, McCluskey reported harassment and other troubling behavior after the breakup. She also sought help from university police as she attempted to distance herself from the man. In the days that followed, investigators continued looking into allegations connected to the relationship.

On the evening of Oct. 22, McCluskey was returning to her residence hall after class while speaking with her mother by phone. During the call, her mother heard McCluskey suddenly cry out. The connection remained open as her family realized something was seriously wrong.

Police were called to the area. McCluskey’s belongings were found, and officers began searching the surrounding area and residence hall. Her body was later discovered inside a vehicle in the parking area.

The man responsible left campus after the killing. Police identified him as Rowland and located him early the following morning in Salt Lake City. As officers pursued him, Rowland entered a church and died by suicide.

McCluskey’s death later prompted an independent examination of the University of Utah’s handling of her case. The review produced 30 recommendations addressing campus safety, police procedures and communication systems.

But before the policy changes and investigations, there was a 21-year-old student whose future was taken. Lauren McCluskey was remembered not simply for the circumstances of her death, but as a scholar, athlete and young woman who expected to graduate and continue building her life.

The children and grandchildren she might have had will never be born. The potential of her future generations was silenced forever. That raises a painful question: Why do attractive women with so much potential fall for men who very appearance is a red flag?

Her story remains a painful chapter in the history of the University of Utah, where she was killed just weeks before what should have been the final stretch of her college career.
