A late-night argument in Augusta, Georgia, ended with a 33-year-old man dead and a 65-year-old man facing murder charges.

Otis Keith Pearce Jr., 33, of Augusta, was fatally shot shortly before midnight Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2026, according to authorities. The Richmond County Sheriff's Office said deputies responded to a shooting and found Pearce unresponsive at a residence. He had been shot at least once.

Pearce was pronounced dead at the scene at 12:10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 20. The Richmond County Coroner's Office later identified him.

Investigators quickly identified a suspect. David Mosley, 65, was arrested at the scene and charged with murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.

According to investigators, Pearce and Mosley knew each other. Authorities said the two men became involved in an argument before Mosley allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot Pearce. Officials have not publicly released additional details about what prompted the confrontation.

The shooting occurred at about 11:21 p.m., giving deputies little time to respond before the case shifted from an active shooting investigation to a homicide investigation.

An autopsy has been scheduled as authorities continue working to establish the full circumstances surrounding Pearce's death. Investigators have not publicly disclosed additional information about the weapon or whether anyone else witnessed the shooting.

The Richmond County Sheriff's Office is handling the criminal investigation, while the Richmond County Coroner's Office is responsible for identifying Pearce and conducting the death investigation.

For now, the known sequence is straightforward but serious: an argument, a shooting, a death and an arrest made at the scene. What remains less clear is what led to the confrontation and what investigators may learn as the case moves forward.
