PENSACOLA, Fla. — Authorities in Escambia County charged a local man this month in connection with the fatal shooting of his partner.
Stephen Pope, 37, died after suffering a shotgun wound to the head. Investigators said Will Bryant, 31, fired the shot while Pope lay in bed inside the home the two shared. Deputies and detectives took Bryant into custody late on Aug. 13, 2026, shortly after the body was located.
The sequence began when Bryant went to Pope’s parents early that morning. He appeared distressed and told them their son was dead. Pope’s father then accompanied Bryant back to the residence, entered the home and confirmed the death. The father placed the 911 call. Officers who arrived noted that Pope had been deceased for some time prior to the report.
A search of Bryant’s vehicle turned up a 12-gauge shotgun, along with shells, a gun lock, related parts and a sales receipt showing the weapon had been bought on June 29, 2026. Testing linked the shotgun to spent shells recovered at the scene. Officers also observed a substance on Bryant’s clothing that tested positive for human blood.
Records show Bryant had contacted the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office in the days leading up to the incident. On Aug. 4 he claimed neighbors were part of the FBI and harassing him. On Aug. 12 he reported that his roommate was trying to frame him for murder; deputies found no one present when they responded and closed the matter without a full report. Pope’s parents earlier told investigators that Bryant had visited them about two weeks before the shooting, upset and saying Pope had returned to using methamphetamine or a similar substance, which strained their relationship.
Court documents list a charge of second-degree murder. Bryant remains held without bond at the Escambia County Jail.
The case remains under investigation by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.
