Josh Gillis Murder Investigation Leads to Three Suspects in Georgia

What began with a report of a vehicle fire in Tifton, Georgia, on July 24 has become a homicide investigation involving three suspects and the death of 36-year-old Josh Gillis.

Tift County Sheriff's Office deputies were sent to the area after receiving a report that a vehicle was burning. When they arrived, they found Gillis deceased inside the vehicle. Investigators determined he had suffered apparent gunshot wounds. An autopsy conducted through the Georgia Bureau of Investigation's Medical Examiner's Office later classified his death as a homicide.

The case moved forward in early August when authorities announced charges against Robert Louis Brown, 41, and Aiyah Foster, 25, both of Tifton.

Brown faces a lengthy list of charges, including malice murder, felony murder, conspiracy to commit a crime, aggravated assault, second-degree arson, improper disposal of human remains, tampering with evidence and firearms-related offenses. Authorities also charged him with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon and possession of a firearm during the commission of a crime.

Foster faces charges of conspiracy to commit a crime, tampering with evidence, improper disposal of human remains and second-degree arson. She was arrested Aug. 6 and booked into the Tift County Jail. Brown was already being held there on unrelated charges.

Investigators also obtained warrants for Derrick Lamar Britt Jr., 33, of Tifton. Unlike the initial reports that identified Britt as being at large, authorities later confirmed that he surrendered at the Tift County Sheriff's Office on Aug. 17.

Britt now faces charges that include malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, second-degree arson, conspiracy to commit a felony, abandonment of a dead body, tampering with evidence and firearm offenses. He also faces a probation violation.

The charges describe a case that investigators believe involved more than one person and multiple alleged crimes surrounding Gillis' death. However, the allegations remain just that until they are tested in court. Each defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation said the investigation remains active. Once investigators complete their work, the case is expected to be turned over to the Tift County District Attorney's Office for prosecution.
