A Friday afternoon in Gonzales, Louisiana, ended with two young people dead and a 17-year-old facing first-degree murder charges.
Tegan Daigle, 17, and Jared Downey, 21, were killed Aug. 21 after police were called to the Gonzales area shortly after 4 p.m. in response to reports of gunfire. Officers arrived and found both victims dead, according to the Gonzales Police Department.
Detectives reviewed witness information and surveillance footage as they worked to determine who was involved. Investigators said a black BMW had been seen at the residence before the shooting and leaving afterward.
Authorities later identified several people believed to have been connected to the incident. Among them was Joseph Appiah, 17, of Prairieville, who was taken into custody with assistance from the Ascension Parish Sheriff's Office.
Appiah faces two counts of first-degree murder, along with charges related to criminal conspiracy, possession of a Schedule I controlled substance with intent to distribute, aggravated assault with a firearm and discharging firearms within city limits.
Two additional people were identified as persons of interest. Detectives were interviewing them as investigators continued working to establish the full circumstances surrounding the killings. Police also said illegal drug activity was a factor in the case.
For investigators, the next steps will center on establishing the sequence of events, determining the roles of those identified in the investigation and gathering evidence that can withstand scrutiny in court.
The case remained active as of the latest police update, with authorities continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the deaths.
