BELOIT, Wis. — A late-August shooting ended with the death of 37-year-old Christopher L. Hayden and, days later, the arrest of a 19-year-old black male in connection with the homicide.
Hayden was shot shortly after 9 p.m. Monday, Aug. 24, 2026, according to police and local reporting. Officers responding to reports of gunfire found Hayden suffering from a gunshot wound. He was taken to a local hospital, where he later died.
The Rock County Medical Examiner’s Department identified Hayden as the victim on Aug. 31. An autopsy was conducted the following day, Aug. 25, as investigators worked to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
Arrest made in homicide investigation
The investigation moved forward the following week when Beloit police arrested 19-year-old Xavion Curb on Sept. 1.
Curb was arrested in connection with the case and was identified by police as being held on suspicion of first-degree intentional homicide. At the time of the initial arrest report, prosecutors had not yet announced a formal charge through the Rock County District Attorney’s Office.
Remembering Christopher Hayden
Hayden was a Beloit resident and a 2007 graduate of Beloit Memorial High School. His obituary says he was born Feb. 28, 1989, in Janesville and had worked for Elevated Company, Amazon and Speedway.
He is survived by his fiancé, Cassandra Phillips, their triplets, a son, his parents, siblings and other relatives, according to his published obituary. A celebration of life was planned for a later date.
