LIMA, Ohio — A routine trip through Allen County ended in tragedy Feb. 28 when a commercial truck crashed into a line of vehicles stopped on Interstate 75, killing Lima resident Hurshel Gipson, 52, and his 11-year-old son.
The crash happened at about 8:15 p.m. on northbound I-75 near Cridersville, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Traffic had backed up when a 2017 Great Dane semi-truck approached the stopped vehicles.
Investigators said the truck, driven by 53-year-old Yvio Michel of Boynton Beach, Florida, failed to maintain an assured clear distance and struck several vehicles. The collision involved four passenger vehicles and another semi-truck.
Michel was arrested in Allen County, Ohio, on Sept. 2, 2026, according to a booking record. He was booked on charges of aggravated vehicular homicide and negligent homicide.
Gipson Was Traveling With His Family
Gipson was riding in a 2015 Buick Enclave driven by his wife, 45-year-old Amanda Gipson. Their son was also in the vehicle.
The impact killed Hurshel Gipson and his son. Both were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the highway patrol.
Amanda Gipson was seriously injured and taken to Mercy Health-St. Rita’s Medical Center. Other motorists also suffered injuries in the chain-reaction crash, including Kayla Route, 28, of Mason, Ohio, who was transported to the same hospital with serious injuries.
Two other drivers, including Michel, were taken to Lima Memorial Hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.
Investigation Remained Pending
The crash forced authorities to close northbound I-75 for approximately five hours while emergency crews worked at the scene and investigators examined what happened.
The Ohio Department of Transportation established a detour for northbound traffic during the closure.
Gipson's death was later reflected in an obituary published by The Lima News. He was identified as Hurshel Ray Gipson, a Lima resident who was born Aug. 17, 1973.
Driver Identified as Haitian National
Yvio Michel was identified in later reports as a Haitian national. Michel was living in Boynton Beach, Florida, at the time of the crash. Reports also said he was not a U.S. citizen and was legally in the country, although an immigration detainer was later placed on him. His nationality and immigration status became part of subsequent reporting about the case.
