Killer gets plea bargain after killing Good Samaritan

PORTLAND, Ore. — Aaron McInnis, a 30-year-old sales representative and father, was shot and killed July 14, 2024, in Northeast Portland after he stopped to see why a woman was crying inside a parked vehicle. The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office later described him as a man who “did not hesitate to check on the safety of a stranger.”Another Good Samaritan killedMcInnis had just dropped off a friend near a park when another man asked him to help look in on a woman heard crying in a nearby car. The two approached the vehicle. Arvoni Alexander Hayes, then 23, was inside with his girlfriend.

Hayes stepped out, then returned to the car and told the woman to drive away. McInnis followed. At a nearby intersection Hayes got out and fired, striking McInnis three times. McInnis was taken to Oregon Health & Science University, where he died.

Police identified him days later. Hayes was arrested in September 2024 by a U.S. Marshals task force.Two years laterHayes pleaded guilty to first-degree manslaughter and unlawful use of a weapon with a firearm. On Sept. 11, 2026, Multnomah County Circuit Court Judge Kelly Skye sentenced him to only 18 years in prison plus three years of post-prison supervision. Hayes had originally faced a second-degree murder charge.

Deputy District Attorney Eric Palmer, who prosecuted the case, said after the hearing: “Aaron McInnis was a hero to the very end. … Today, we honor the hero and send the defendant to prison.”

All-American family man erasedMcInnis worked as a sales representative in the Portland area. Family members recalled him as a loyal brother and a father who played video games and went ice skating with his young son. He had played hockey from kindergarten through high school.

The case began as a homicide investigation and ended with a plea and a lengthy prison term.
