An 18-year-old Penn Hills man was killed during an early-morning shooting that authorities say began with a planned drug transaction and later led to homicide charges against another teenager.
Kevin Walter was shot inside a Penn Hills home shortly after 2 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 18, 2026. Allegheny County police identified Walter as the person who died at the scene. A second 17-year-old male was also shot and was taken to a hospital for treatment.
Investigation points to alleged robbery
According to a criminal complaint cited by local news organizations, 17-year-old Tayquawn Mills went to Walter's home with another person for what investigators described as a drug transaction.
Police said Mills told detectives that the other person discussed robbing Walter before they entered the home. The accounts given to investigators differed in some details, including what happened immediately before the shooting.
Mills was also wounded during the encounter. Police later found him nearby and took him to a hospital. Investigators said he had suffered a gunshot wound to the chest.
Investigators found both rifle and handgun shell casings inside the home, according to police. The weapon or weapons believed to have been used were not recovered at the time of the initial investigation. Police also said another person could have been involved.
Teenager charged weeks later
Nearly a month after Walter's death, authorities charged Mills with homicide, robbery, burglary and criminal conspiracy. The charges are allegations, and the criminal case remains subject to court proceedings.
