A homicide investigation in the Dayton, Ohio, area has led to a murder indictment against a 27-year-old man accused of killing Tiffany N. Collins, 36, and then becoming involved in a series of vehicle thefts and confrontations with police.

Collins was found dead inside her Miami Township apartment on the morning of Sept. 4, 2026. The Montgomery County Coroner’s Office identified her as the victim and reported that she had suffered a gunshot wound. Authorities say the killing occurred the previous day, Sept. 3.

Suspect identified as Tywon Stephens

Investigators connected the homicide to Tywon Dashawn Stephens, 27, of Dayton. According to court and police reports, Stephens was later arrested after an extraordinary sequence of alleged vehicle thefts and a police pursuit.

Authorities say Stephens took Collins’ Chrysler 300 after her death. He was then accused of abandoning the vehicle, attempting to take a semi-truck and later taking another vehicle. Police pursued him after he drove through an active crash investigation in Dayton.

Stephens allegedly fled from the vehicle after it crashed, then returned to the area and took a Dayton police cruiser. The cruiser was later driven into a home, according to police and prosecutors. Several officers were injured while taking Stephens into custody.

Murder case moves into court

A Montgomery County grand jury indicted Stephens on Sept. 14. The indictment includes a murder charge along with numerous other counts stemming from the events involving Collins, stolen vehicles and the police pursuit.

Stephens pleaded not guilty at a Sept. 17 court appearance. His attorneys also indicated that he intends to pursue a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity and requested a competency evaluation. His bond was set at $1 million, with another court appearance scheduled for Sept. 29.

The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation took over the homicide investigation from Miami Township police. The case remains active as the legal proceedings continue.
