BALTIMORE, Maryland — What began as a reported robbery in Baltimore's Fells Point neighborhood Tuesday morning became a homicide investigation two days later when 76-year-old Claudia Bismark died from injuries suffered in the attack.

Bismark and her husband, 60-year-old Wade Wilson, were assaulted at about 9:34 a.m. Sept. 29, according to the Baltimore Police Department. Both were knocked to the ground, and the attacker took Wilson's wallet before leaving the area. The couple was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Bismark remained hospitalized in critical condition until her death Thursday, Oct. 1. Wilson also suffered injuries but survived the attack. Local reports said his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Suspect Arrested

Police arrested 32-year-old Montray McCray of Baltimore on Oct. 1. Warrant apprehension detectives took him into custody in Baltimore and transported him to the Central Booking Intake Facility.

The police department initially announced charges of assault, robbery and reckless endangerment. After Bismark died, authorities said the case was being investigated as a homicide and upgraded charges were pending. CBS Baltimore subsequently reported that the charges against McCray included homicide.

According to charging documents reported by CBS Baltimore, investigators allege McCray was inside a nearby market before the attack and watched Bismark and Wilson before they left. The documents say he followed the couple and approached them from behind. Both were knocked down during the confrontation, and Wilson's wallet was taken.

The case remains in its early stages. McCray is accused of committing the assault and robbery and has not been convicted. The allegations will have to be addressed through the court process.

Investigation

Police have identified surveillance footage as part of the investigation. Detectives also located McCray before taking him into custody Thursday.

Bismark's death changed the nature of the case from an assault and robbery investigation to a homicide investigation. Wilson's recovery is now another part of the aftermath as authorities continue working through the evidence.

The Baltimore Police Department has not publicly released every detail of the investigation, and additional information could emerge as the criminal case proceeds.
