MANASSAS, Va. — A morning at a Manassas workplace turned deadly Wednesday, Sept. 30, when a company employee opened fire on three co-workers, killing two and injuring another before fleeing the area, authorities said.
The two men who died were identified as Ricky Lamot, 48, and Christopher Serrano, 33. A third employee was taken to a hospital and was reported in stable condition.
Police identified Marvin Grant, 37, of Charlotte, North Carolina, as the suspected shooter. Grant also worked for the company, United Rentals, where the shooting occurred.
Shooting began after an altercation
According to Manassas Police Chief Douglas Keen, an altercation preceded the shooting. Authorities said Grant arrived for work Wednesday morning and made a threatening statement to a co-worker before pulling out a handgun and shooting the three employees.
Police received the initial report shortly after 7 a.m. Officers from the Manassas Police Department and Prince William County Sheriff's Office responded and found the three victims. All were transported for medical treatment, where Lamot and Serrano later died.
Investigators have not announced a motive. The circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain under investigation.
Suspect located hours later
Grant left the Manassas area before police arrived and was later located by Virginia State Police in Augusta County, farther west along Interstate 81.
Troopers attempted to stop the vehicle, but Grant continued driving, leading to a pursuit. He eventually stopped along the interstate and exited his vehicle with a firearm, according to state police. A tactical team and negotiator were sent to the scene as officers attempted to resolve the situation.
Grant ultimately shot himself and was later pronounced dead. Virginia State Police said officers did not use force during the standoff.
The deaths leave two employees dead, another recovering from injuries and an investigation still underway in Manassas, Virginia.
