Nearly four years after Darryl and Sharon Getman were found dead inside their Mount Dora, Florida, home, a Lake County jury reached a verdict in the case.
Vickie Lynn Williams, 53, was convicted Sept. 22, 2026, of two counts of first-degree murder in the deaths of the retired couple. She also was convicted of theft. The verdict followed a trial that brought investigators' evidence, surveillance footage and forensic findings before jurors.
New Year's Eve killings
The Getmans, Darryl, 83, and Sharon, 80, were found stabbed to death on Dec. 31, 2022, at the senior living community where they lived in Mount Dora.
According to prosecutors, the investigation eventually connected Williams to the killings. Evidence presented at trial included surveillance footage showing Williams at the retirement community and evidence linking her to the couple's vehicle and property.
The couple's green Kia Soul was reported missing after their deaths. Investigators traced the vehicle as it traveled north, eventually locating Williams in Savannah, Georgia. She was arrested in January 2023.
Prosecutors also presented forensic evidence during the trial, including evidence that Williams' DNA was found inside the Getmans' home. Investigators said the couple died from multiple stab wounds.
Defense focused on mental illness
Williams' defense acknowledged her involvement in the killings but argued that serious mental illness affected her state of mind at the time.
Prosecutors disputed that argument, maintaining that Williams understood her actions were wrong. Jurors ultimately rejected the defense and returned guilty verdicts after about 30 minutes of deliberation.
The verdict moved the case into a separate penalty phase because prosecutors were seeking the death penalty.
Life sentence follows conviction
On Sept. 25, jurors recommended that Williams receive life in prison rather than death. Judge Cary F. Rada then sentenced her to life in the Florida Department of Corrections without the possibility of parole.
The sentence brought the trial proceedings to a close in a case that began with the deaths of an elderly Mount Dora couple on the final day of 2022.
For Darryl and Sharon Getman, the case was ultimately about two lives lost. For prosecutors, the trial centered on evidence gathered over nearly four years and presented to a jury before Williams was convicted of their murders.
